One Body, Many Minds

11/21/2017

Like anyone else, my friends and I have different talents. I excel at writing. One of my friends is great at chemistry. Another is good at making pop culture references. Still another is studying to be a nurse and seems to know everything that there is to know about the human body, diseases, and the medical field. However, these differences don’t change the fact that we’re friends.
The Body of Christ
Picture
The same goes for the body of Christ. In Romans 12:3-6, Paul writes, “For by the grace given me, I say to every one of you, do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself in sober judgement, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith.” We’ve all heard sermons and read devotions about the concept Paul discusses: together, with our various talents being used for one divine goal, we are stronger.  However, combining all our strengths leads to another asset: we are willing and able to give because everyone is sharing a talent the way people share dishes at a potluck. When you think about our different gifts that way, it makes sense that joining our talent with others for good is a way of serving God.

Ultimately, you can rest assured, knowing that no matter what your gifts are, you can use them to contribute to the amazing banquet of talents that God has provided here on earth.

"There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work."  1 Corinthians 12:5-6 (NIV)

"For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."  Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen."  1 Peter 4:10-11 (NIV)

What gifts has God given to you?

Best Baby Monitor Features

Any new parent knows that it’s important to keep a close eye on your little bundle of joy. Baby monitors are a great way to make sure all is well in the nursery. With advancements in technology, these devices have come a long way from being basic audio monitors. But which features are most important? Here are some factors Reviews.com looked at when they reviewed various popular baby monitors:

Who wouldn't want to keep an eye on these precious little ones?

We looked for monitors that had parents’ go-to features.
Picture
Nearly 100 monitors on our initial list offered infrared night vision, volume control, and support for additional cameras. To narrow our search, we earmarked particularly useful qualities we saw mentioned again and again on parenting sites. We only considered monitors that met at least two of our four criteria:
  • Microphone sensitivity: There’s a difference between hearing your baby cry, and hearing every little noise. All baby monitors have the option to turn down the volume, but some offer thresholds for parents who are more comfortable with only hearing the biggest upsets, and prefer not to hear the self-comforting noises their baby makes as they fall asleep.

  • Audio display: Even when the monitor is muted, an audio display will show you how loud your baby is with a little chart on the screen. If you want to listen to music for a while without the background white noise, an audio display will let you know if your baby is only quietly cooing in their sleep, or if they are well awake and need attention.
  • Two-way talk: It’s not intended to let you cry at your baby for a change, but being able to talk to your little one can help soothe them in the moment, or offer just enough reassurance that they might fall back asleep. As your child gets a little older, it’s an easy way to gently remind them to stop playing around and go to sleep.

  • Temperature Sensor: Babies are particularly susceptible to overheating and hypothermia because they can’t regulate their body temperature as well as adults. Monitors with these sensors display the room temperature on your screen so you don’t have to check your home system, and some will alert you when the room becomes too hot or too cold.

What Volunteering at New Beginnings-A Home for Mothers Means To Me.

What does volunteering mean to you? In Matthew 5:16 we are told, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Volunteering at New Beginnings means much more to me than doing a good deed. Yes, I get to glorify my Father in heaven but I feel like there is even more to that.  Volunteering at New Beginnings means that I get the opportunity to serve others while making a difference in someone's life. I feel like when I serve at New Beginnings, I am letting my light shine by proclaiming the Word of God to mothers to help them grow in their faith which is a wonderful blessing. Jesus was the ultimate servant when it comes to helping others and in effort to mirror Him, I will do what I can as a humble servant to do the same.

Not only do I get to share my faith here at New Beginnings but I am also able to provide a listening ear without judgment to all of the mothers. Sometimes, it can be hard for people to share their feelings especially when they are constantly feeling judged. My goal is to give those people a listening ear and make them feel comfortable. Along with listening with an open ear comes making close connections. When you get to know someone, you figure out you have more in common than you think. One connection I have already made is that one mother and I grew up in the same town for seventeen years and out of all of the places we could have ended up, we met each other here at New Beginnings! An amazing benefit about volunteering is that some day those close connections can lead to lifelong friendships.

When I graduate from Wisconsin Lutheran College, my goal is to become a neonatal/OB nurse. I feel like New Beginnings gives me the opportunity to use my passion of caring for mothers and their babies and I could not be more thankful. Besides, who wouldn’t want to play and cuddle with the biggest blessings life has to offer?
