Why I Work

Last summer, God blessed me with an incredible opportunity to serve as an intern at New Beginnings – A Home for Mothers. Over the course of just a couple of short months, I gained invaluable, real-life experience in my area of interest (psychology). I was able to learn a bit about how a program like New Beginnings is run as well as bond with the residents and their babies. Earlier this summer, He blessed me again with an even greater opportunity to come back and serve as an Assistant Home Manager at New Beginnings. My work in this position has turned my passion for helping others into a reality. I am able to provide support and guidance to individuals in need and I am able to clearly see their progress in many aspects of their lives from education to spirituality. This work has also been a fantastic learning experience for me; it has altered my perspective and opened my eyes to many issues of which I was previously unaware.

It hasn’t all been positive. The work God has called us to do here comes with many challenges and conflicts. Ultimately, my faith is what drives me to continue to do this and it is the reason I have had the strength to get this far. I know that God has placed me in this position because the work that I do here is important and therefore, I should always do it to the best of my ability. I am encouraged by Paul in his letter to the believers in Colossae. “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:17). “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,” (Colossians 3:23). I am also motivated and encouraged by the fact that I know that our work really is vital to improving the lives of the individuals we serve. Sometimes people find themselves in a tough spot in life and it is so rewarding to be able to provide them with a hand up to help them get back on their feet. By serving single mothers, we are able to impact the lives of not only the mothers, but their children and possibly generations to come! What a HUGE blessing to be a part of something so wonderful! Another great benefit to working in this setting is having the ability to witness to these women through regular devotions and simply by acting out of love for them in Christ. I am so thankful to God that He has led me to such a fulfilling vocation and that He gives me the guidance, support, and strength to carry out the mission of New Beginnings.

Taleya Williamson is an Assistant Home Manager at New Beginnings.  She was born and raised in Puyallup, Washington and attended Evergreen Lutheran High School.  Taleya recently graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran College with a Bachelors of Science in psychology with a minor in anthropology.  In her free time, Taleya enjoys spending time with her husband, David.
